Summer in Lake Tahoe: things to do, hiking, SUP

Lake Tahoe is one of my favorite summer destinations in the US. When I first visited I couldn't believe how clear the water was; it was just like a pool! The size of lake tahoe is no joke! it's 22 miles long, 12 miles wide, and has 72 miles of shoreline to explore. It's the second deepest lake in the US after Crater Lake.

When to go

While I do love downhill skiing in Tahoe, nothing compares to summers here. I went for the independence holiday in early July. You can go anytime during June - September for avoiding snow! If you're looking to ski, this is also a great place for that. Make sure to get refundable hotels/airbnbs if you're staying during fire season (end of summer). In the summer temperatures are comfortably in the 70-80s and it is overall really pleasant.

Where to Stay

If you're traveling solo I recommend staying at a hotel in South Lake Tahoe.

If you're with a large group, then use Vrbo, we stayed with our two dogs here at this incredible A-frame (this might not be dog-friendly anymore sadly). It was the perfect place for our girls trip and to explore local trails and be close to all the restaurants. If you're just traveling as a couple or solo, then try staying here at one the budget-friendly or nicer dog-friendly hotels! You can also camp, but sites fill up quickly and are limited. We stayed at a lovely A-frame.

If you're looking for a more relaxed vibe then you can get an airbnb or vrbo up on the northern coast of Lake Tahoe. I did this for a ski trip one year and it was a lot more peaceful and less rowdy.

Swimming and Paddleboarding

Paddleboarding is one of my favorite summer activities. I use the Retrospec SUP now and you can either use the manual pump or electric pump if you're by your car. The pump also fits in the backpack for the SUP, which is what I usually do. If you manage to snag a spot at the trailhead then you can park there to walk to Secret Cove or Chimney beach.

Sand harbor: there are rumors they are starting a permit system there soon, so check regulations before you go. This place only takes cash and the parking is usually full! The advantage here is you can

Secret Cove: this is a short hike down from the road and there's nothing secret about it. It's where you'll find crystal clear blue water with giant rocks, a perfect place to SUP with your dog and also fly your drone (if others aren't around).

Chimney Beach: This spot is great if you want to have more room to lay down and tan and have a picnic. There's more space at this beach than at the Secret Cove nude beach. Also dogs are allowed at this beach, so it's a great spot to launch your SUP with the pup.

Hiking

The hiking around here is absolutely beautiful! I love taking in views of the lake from all angles. I didn't spend a ton of time hiking here, but managed to fit in a few. Some of the hikes I enjoyed while I was there were:

1. Granite Lake and Maggie's Peak: this dog-friendly hike is a great short workout with very rewarding views. If you only have time for one hike, make it this one!

2. Cave Rock Trail: this is an easy dog-friendly trail with stunning views. It's great to stop by if you're on the way to another destination!

Take a boat ride

Take a private guided boat ride around the lake; you can also do a sailing tour. This was perfect for our girls trip because we wanted a day to drink and just enjoy the scenery, while not having to do much work. It's a great way to explore and see all that lake tahoe has in store. I loved jumping in the water, just remember it is COLD. If you really want to go all out there are scenic wine-tasting boat ride tours as well.

Other Things to Do

  1. Gondola Ride: Dogs are allowed on the Northstar ski gondola in the summer for a cost, and then this will take you directly to the Tahoe Rim trail (yes, some people hike the entire rim of the lake which is insane!) which you can do partially.

  2. Biking: Lake Tahoe East Shore trail is 3 miles and considered one of the most beautiful biking trails in the US. It's stunning and a perfect way to spend an afternoon off the water.

  3. Golden hour at Truckee Marsh: In South lake tahoe there's a short trail along the marsh area and it's stunning at golden hour. The path leads to the ocean too and it's just beautiful! You get the mountain backdrop too.

Flying your Drone

There's plenty of places to fly your drone in Lake tahoe which also makes it appealing for aerial photographers. Much of the lake is safe for flying, so get out and enjoy!
