Shikoku-ken

a japanese national treasure

I curated a list of items that I used for Sora throughout puppyhood and currently. Hopefully this helps figure out some starter items as you bring home your Shikoku dog!

about the breed

Shikoku are a Japanese dog breed that originated on the island of Shikoku in Japan; they are one of 6 native, primitive Japanese hunting breeds. They are an independent and cautious breed that are extremely loyal and smart. They were bred to hunt wild boar and deer, so naturally they have a very high prey drive. A great place for up-to-date info on the breed can be found here.

finding a shikoku

Shikoku are rare around the world, and you likely won't find one in a rescue since so few exist and the ones who own them are passionate about preserving the breed, so your main options are reputable breeders in the US and importing from Japan. I would recommend searching online for reputable breeders as well as on Facebook and messaging people via Instagram to find out where you can get one. Sora is from Hachidori Sou Kennel in Virginia.

training a shikoku

Shikoku are not recommended for your first dog as they can require a lot more investment in terms of training. They will quickly learn potty training, but the main issues people have with this breed is their reactivity. However, they were bred to be reactive since they are hunting dogs, so this trait will be something you'll have to be mindful of. Each dog is different, but some shikoku will be prone to people or dog reactivity, which you'll likely have to hire a professional to help manage if it's your first time raising a reactive dog. Socialization and training should start early; and you'll want to continue to reinforce boundaries with them, so they respect you.

prey drive

Shikoku are highly motivated by their prey drive and less motivated by food-based rewards. I often have to stimulate Sora's hunger by working her prey drive first (then she will eat directly after). I recommend getting a flirt pole toy and signing your Shikoku up for Fast Cate or lure coursing competitions; they will have the time of their life! You can find out about these events on the official AKC website.
